On January 27th we will be playing Varsity basketball at home against Blue Ridge beginning with varsity girls at 6:00. This night will serve as two special occasions. First, it is our senior night and seniors will be recognized between the varsity girls and boys games. And second, we are calling the game "BLACK OUT AGAINST CANCER". We will be wearing our away black uniforms and encourage everyone to wear black to show your support for cancer awareness. We will be wearing Black out T-Shirts as shown below, and if you would like to purchase one email Coach Lamb at: brett.lamb@macon.k12.nc.us with your size. The coast is $ 15.00 per shirt. You can pay with cash, checks payable to the Highlands Booster Club, or you can venmo Coach Lamb at @Brett-Lamb-45. T-shirt orders will be sent this Friday Jan 20th. If you have not paid I will not order your shirt. Part of the game proceeds will be donated to cancer research. We hope to see all of you on this special night January 27th!

Mrs. Holbrooks and Mrs. Cashion organized a special brunch to show recognition to the custodial staff and the local law enforcement. Mrs. Cashion, teacher, and her student helpers prepared a brunch for custodial staff and law enforcement, Just a little thank you for all the BIG jobs they have each day. The group enjoyed eggs, grits, toast, bacon, sausage, biscuts, homemade jam, and a wonderful hashbrown casserole. Highlands School is a great place to work and learn. We appreciate everyone that helps to make our school so special.

Mrs. Taylor's 2nd grade class worked with Project Explore-an initiative of The NC Arboretum. Students were busy learning about their project and identifying bird characteristics. It was a cold day for bird watching! Mrs. Taylor's class listened for birds and they were able to spot 2 blue jays. The class will continue to learn more about the birds of Western NC; they will use the charts throughout the year to ID birds. The class plans on logging data about the birds they observe to help scientists; they will be doing this weekly. Thank you to the NC Arboretum's Science Educator, Ms. Kristen, for visiting Mrs. Taylor's 2nd grade class today. @NCArboretum
